Reporters Allowed Into Tibet

LHASA, China (AP) - A group of foreign journalists allowed into
Tibet is being closely watched by Chinese authorities, who
apparently are trying to show life is back to normal after rioting
earlier this month.
But police stationed throughout the Tibet capital city indicate
it remains under lockdown.
Twenty-six reporters are on the visit. They’re being monitored
by officials from three levels of government.
There is increasing international pressure on China over the
crackdown in Tibet. Beijing is preparing for the Olympics in less
than five months.
The uprising was the most sustained against Chinese rule in
almost two decades, embarrassing and frustrating the Communist
leadership hoping for a smooth run-up to the games.
A few countries have left open the possibility of boycotting the
event.
