Low Snow Level Means Dry Summer

     SACRAMENTO (AP) – The Sierra Nevada snowpack has fallen below
normal levels after California experienced its driest two-month
period on record.
     The Department of Water Resources says scientists found snowpack
water content averaging only 67 percent of normal throughout the

Quake Shakes California Town

     BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) – A moderate earthquake shook a
mountainous area near Bakersfield, California, this morning, just
hours after a quake some 230 miles to the southeast.
     The U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.4-magnitude quake struck

Unemployment Claims Soar

     WASHINGTON (AP) – The number of newly laid off workers filing
claims for unemployment benefits soared last week.
     The Labor Department reported Thursday that claims for
unemployment benefits rose by 35,000 to 380,000. Private economists
had expected claims would rise by a smaller 18,000.
