YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - Myanmar’s military regime is apparently
trying to turn aid distribution to cyclone victims into a
propaganda exercise.
State-run television has continuously run images of top generals
handing out boxes of aid to survivors at elaborate ceremonies.
The director of Burma Campaign UK, which campaigns for human
rights and democracy in the country, says regional commanders have
been putting their names on aid shipments and calling it “a gift
from them.”
One box bore the name of a rising star in the government
hierarchy in bold letters that overshadowed a smaller label
reading: “Aid from the Kingdom of Thailand.”
State media reports that more than 23,000 people have died
because of the cyclone and more than 37,000 are missing. Diplomats
warn the death toll could eventually exceed 100,000.
