A double dose of bad economic news for Chico Unified School Board members this week. The district is rapidly running out of cash and must lay off 15 part time non-faculty staff members whose grant funds have run out. Jan Combes with the Chico Unified School District says the state would frown on the district paying for the positions from its general fund, as the district is trying to avoid a state takeover.

The district is facing a cash crisis next summer, when it may face borrowing money from the state.
