Geithner Criticizes Proposed GOP Budget Cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner took a shot at Republicans for focusing too much on spending and tax cuts and not doing enough to support economic growth. In a speech in Chicago, Geithner says government support is necessary to invest in education, build roads and infrastructure and help job growth. He also disputed GOP criticism that the Obama administration has imposed too much regulation on business. “A growth strategy for the American economy requires more than promises to cut taxes and spending,” Geithner said in prepared remarks to the Economic Club of Chicago. “We have to be willing to do things, not just cut things.” Geithner’s remarks were made one day after President Barack Obama ramped up his attacks on GOP budget proposals and Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney.
