SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A spokesman for California Assembly Speaker John Perez says Democratic lawmakers aren’t likely to be offended by Gov. Jerry Brown’s calls for legislators to “man up” and pass his proposed spending cuts. John Vigna says the Democratic governor is “known for his colorful rhetoric throughout the years,” adding “This is Jerry Brown, and people understand that.” During an interview with radio station KGO, Brown said the state budget deficit will likely exceed the $9.2 billion shortfall his administration predicted earlier this year. Brown had asked that billions of dollars in cuts be enacted by March, but lawmakers are determined to wait until he releases his revised budget in May. A spokeswoman for Democratic Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg says that position hasn’t changed.
