Fire Station 5 off Manzanita Avenue in Chico will reopen today, a month ahead of time. Chico officials declared Thursday there is enough money to reopen the station effective June 1. The station was closed because the department needed to save 95 thousand dollars out of its budget. Fire Chief Jim Beery says the reopening means response time in the area will improve dramatically. It appears other cuts and reductions in costs have allowed the station to reopen early. The closure was the focus of several protests by fire and public safety personnel.
