Self-Proclaimed Satanist Arrested in Red Bluff Church Fire

Red Bluff Police say a self-proclaimed Satanist has been arrested for allegedly starting a fire at a local church as a statement against organized religion. 38 year old Jodie Houtman is facing charges including arson. Police say a fire at the Methodist Church on David Avenue caused about 10 thousand dollars in damage Thursday morning.

Two Suspects in Different Robberies Arrested in Chico

Chico Police nabbing two suspects in two different robberies by making one traffic stop. Police say they received information from local bank staff about “suspicious circumstances” at the US Bank on the Esplanade Thursday afternoon. A bank employee reported a woman wearing a wig and a man wearing sunglasses immediately left the bank after a manager said hello to the couple. Police stopped the pair in an SUV around East and Cohasset and say a loaded handgun fell to the ground when the passenger opened the vehicle door. 36 year old Emily Clark of Willows was arrested in connection to a Dollar Store robbery earlier this month in Chico. 57 year old Gary Belcher is a suspect in a Corning bank robbery.

Two People Dead Following Magalia Shooting

Butte County investigators are trying to piece together what happened in a Magalia home following a double shooting. Two people, a mother and son, suffered gunshot wounds Thursday. The Butte County Sheriff’s Office has identified the two as 50 year old Kelli Leroux and 25 year old Travis Leroux. Both died at the scene. Authorities say the two were discovered at a home on Fir Haven Drive after Thomas Leroux came home from work. Investigators say initial reports indicated the possibility of a “murder-suicide” but no determination will be made until after autopsies and the investigation is complete. The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing additional details about the shooting.

Obama: Egypt not an Ally or Enemy

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama says in an interview that the U.S. would not consider Egypt an ally, “but we don’t consider them an enemy.” Obama says in an interview with the Spanish-language network Telemundo that Egypt is a “new government that is trying to find its way.” He warns that if the Egyptian government takes actions showing “they’re not taking responsibility,” then it would “be a real big problem.” The president discussed the Middle East in the aftermath of protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo that led to crowds climbing the embassy walls and tearing down an American flag. It coincided with attacks on the U.S. consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi that led to the killing of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

New Candidate Enters Race for State Senate Seat

The woman who used to be President of the Chico School Board will now be a candidate for State Senate. Jann Reed reportedly said Wednesday she is entering the race for the 4th District Senate Seat being vacated by Doug LaMalfa. Reed is not listed as a Democrat or Republican. Instead, she is in the category called “Decline to State.”

North State Man Dies from West Nile Virus

AUBURN, Calif. (AP) – A Northern California man has died from the West Nile virus, the state’s fifth death to the mosquito-borne virus this year. The Sacramento Bee says 74-year-old Howard Stolz of Placer County died Saturday after being hospitalized for 10 days with encephalitis, a severe neuroinvasive condition brought on by the virus. Placer County stretches from the suburbs of Sacramento to Lake Tahoe and the Nevada border. Four other Californians have died from West Nile this year. The virus is spread by mosquitoes. One out of every 150 infected people develop severe symptoms, including neck stiffness, disorientation, coma and paralysis.

Pipe Bomb Discovered in Chico Apartment of Standoff Suspect

Authorities searching the Chico apartment of a man killed during a standoff with police found a pipe bomb. The neighborhood off Burnap Avenue was evacuated Wednesday afternoon. The local bomb squad was called in to handle the device and exploded the bomb. It was reportedly discovered in an apartment bedroom of Wayne Renner, who was shot and killed Tuesday night.

Man Found in Basement After Chico Foot Chase

Chico Police say a man who ran from an officer Wednesday was found hiding in a basement and arrested. Police say an officer tried to contact Reynaldo Perez on the Esplanade near Umpqua Bank, following a report of a “suspicious person,” when the man took off on foot, jumping fences and prompting a chase. A bank employee reported Perez looked similar to a man who robbed the bank with a knife in August. A police dog tracked Perez to a basement on Laburnum Avenue, where he was taken into custody. He’s facing charges including resisting arrest and violation of parole.

Clinton Pays Tribute to Slain Ambassador

WASHINGTON (AP) – Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans who were killed in an attack on a U.S. consulate last night had been “committed to helping the Libyan people reach for a better future.” Ambassador Chris Stevens was a career diplomat who was confirmed as ambassador to Libya by the Senate earlier this year. He had already served two tours in Libya, and had run the office in Benghazi during the revolt against Moammar Gadhafi. Clinton said Stevens had a “passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people.” She says he was dedicated to “advancing closer ties with the people of the Middle East and North Africa.” The secretary of state says Stevens “risked his own life to lend the Libyan people a helping hand to build the foundation for a new, free nation”
