CA School Districts Scramble to Cover State Funding Losses

LOS ANGELES (AP) – School districts throughout California are scrambling to cover the loss of $327.6 million in state funding cuts, including the elimination of money for school bus service starting next month. Representatives of the California School Boards Association and Association of California School Administrators told a news conference Wednesday they are considering joining a lawsuit that was to be filed Wednesday by the Los Angeles Unified School District to block the loss of busing funds. Dennis Meyers of the school board’s association says low income districts will be particularly hard hit by the loss of $248 million in busing funds. He says busing is crucial for special needs students and rural children. The state is also cutting $79.6 million in general funds. The state only covers a portion of busing costs.
