No Whooping Cough Deaths in CA in 2011

For the first time in 20 years, there were no deaths in California from whooping cough in 2011. There were still some 3 thousand infections, but no deaths. Dr. Mark Lundberg with Butte County Public Health says the number of cases in Butte County was cut in half last year, from 32 to 16.  Last year a new state law went into effect requiring middle and high school students to get a booster shot. A state official says authorities are waiting to see how this year goes before declaring the epidemic over. But he says the state is headed in the right direction.
