Firefighter Killed in Anderson Accident Identified

ANDERSON, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say a truck slid off a hail-covered highway in Shasta County, killing a firefighter and injuring an officer who were responding to previous accidents. The fatal crash happened around 6:15 a.m. Wednesday just south of Anderson. California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Mel Hutsell says a man driving a Chevrolet pickup truck skidded off the road while trying to avoid a spinning car and went down an embankment. The vehicle struck a Cottonwood firefighter and a CHP officer who were in the embankment helping victims of an earlier wreck. The coroner identified the man killed as 35-year-old Fire Capt. Mark Ratledge. The Record-Searchlight of Redding reports that the officer and another person were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver, 31-year-old Jared Shumaker, wasn’t cited or arrested.
