Radio pioneer, founder of KHSL-TV and KHSL-Radio, Russ Pope dies

Russell Pope, a long-time resident of Chico, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at his home in Berry Creek, CA. He was 95.

He married Forest Helen Moore in 1941 in South Pasadena, CA. She died in 1997.

He is survived by their children: Ron Pope of Normal, IL, Kathy Main of Chico, CA; Terry Pope of Simi Valley, CA; and by 7 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. He married Eleanor Morris in 2003. She died in 2007.

Mr. Pope, a pioneer in radio and television, retired from the Golden Empire Broadcasting Company, the owner of KHSL Radio and TV in 1995, after 54 years of employment. He was the company’s President and Director of Engineering when he stepped down.

Over his working lifetime he was an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the National Association of Broadcasters, having chaired the NAB conference committee four times; and the Satellite Frequency Coordination Committee.

He joined the Chico Rotary Club in 1956, where he maintained perfect attendance, and was given a Paul Harris Fellow Award. He also served as Chairman of the Northern California Civil Defense Committee, and Chairman of the Organization and Extension Committee of Mt. Lassen Boy Scouts for several years, and served in other similar positions.

A Visitation will be held Thursday evening, May 10, 2012 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Bidwell Chapel.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 11, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Christian Life Center at 1492 East Avenue in Chico.
